Warren J. Plaut (1951-1987) This letter was posted by Jon Weissman. http://wmjwj.org/warren-j-plaut-charitable-trust
Dear Brothers & Sisters, Warren Plaut died 26 years ago today. As time goes by, I work with more and more folks who did not know him. Here's an introduction. Warren was born in Chicago on November 22, 1951. His family moved to New York where Warren graduated from high school. After graduating from Antioch College in Ohio with a degree in Latin American studies, he worked for the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) in New York City. This work and his travel in Latin America were the foundation of his untiring efforts to support peace and freedom in that region. In 1974, Warren settled in Holyoke and got a job at National Blank Book, a major local employer and part of a global corporation, Dennison National. He fought for a democratic and strong union. Warren wrote for and distributed New Unity, a Western Mass. rank-and-file labor paper, published by union and community activists in Springfield from 1970 to 1980. In 1976 he helped found the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) in Boston. MassCOSH's Western Mass. branch office became Western MassCOSH in 1991. Western MassCOSH annually awards the Warren Plaut Award to a labor activist who fights for occupational safety and health. In 1984 Warren was elected President of Graphic Communications International Union Local 48-B, representing workers at Dennison National and smaller shops in Holyoke and Springfield. He encouraged everyone to participate in union activities. The union newsletter was revived. Spanish and Polish translation was provided at all union meetings. His monthly Safety and Health Committee meetings offered education to all members. Warren saw a direct connection between the plight of workers here and in Central America, both exploited by the same global corporations supported by Pres. Reagan running guns to the death squads. He helped form the Western Mass. Labor Committee on Central America, working with the Springfield Area Central America Project. As WMLCCA co-chair, he helped organize the 1986 East Coast tour of Central American labor leaders. In 1985 Warren married Roberta Krause, a union activist and officer in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 455. When Warren died tragically in a camping accident in New Hampshire on May 25, 1987, he had just successfully finished contract negotiations with Dennison. Through internal organizing, the contract was settled without a strike. With Roberta and her daughter Jennifer, those he left behind organized the Warren J. Plaut Charitable Trust, chaired by Roberta, to raise funds and donate them to organizations doing the kind of social justice work Warren did. Today the Trust has three funds: the Warren Plaut Memorial Fund, the Jobs with Justice Fund, and the Union Community Fund. 26 years ago, the Trustees wrote: Warren Plaut was incredibly exuberant, whether in the union hall, on the softball field, on the dance floor. He was alive with a vision of a socialist world where everyone could share in life's bounty. Warren survives in us all-if we take up where he left off . his love of life . his sense of justice. his hard work. In solidarity, Jon
